At Up River Marine, we provide ballast water sampling and testing services in accordance with the U.S. EPA’s Vessel General Permit (VGP) and international ballast water regulations, including the IMO D-2 Standard.
We assist vessel owners and operators in fulfilling their biological and chemical monitoring obligations, especially for vessels equipped with Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS).
What we test
Biological indicators
– Viable organisms in three defined size classes
– Compliance with biological effluent limitations
– Sampling from ballast water discharges using EPA-referenced methods
Residual biocides and byproducts
– Measurement of compounds such as chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, or ozone derivatives
– Compliance with toxicity thresholds under 40 CFR Part 136
– Tested promptly, following prescribed holding times and sensitivity protocols
Sampling schedules covered
– Initial testing: 2 to 5 discharge events depending on type approval status
– Maintenance monitoring: 1 to 4 times per year, depending on system performance
– Samples are tested individually and not averaged
– Minimum 14-day interval between discharge sampling events
– Records must be retained onboard for three years in compliance with VGP Part 4.2
